Description

The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather represents the typical 'dove grey' plumage that characterizes the species. Pigeons are known for their strong flight and bobbing head movement while walking.

Colour & Pattern

Overall grayish-brown to charcoal. The rachis is light-colored at the base, transitioning to a darker grey. The feather displays slight melanistic variation typical of 'blue' or 'checkered' feral pigeon morphs, with a matte finish and no distinctive banding.

Barb Structure

Mixed pennaceous and plumulaceous; the distal (top) half features pennaceous barbs meant for coverage, while the proximal (bottom) half is highly plumulaceous (downy) for insulation. Barbicels are present but the feather appears weathered.

Texture & Surface

The surface is matte and soft. The lower portion has a very fluffy, downy texture, while the upper vane is smoother but currently appears stiff and somewhat 'clumped' due to moisture or wear.

Key Features

Soft, downy base comprising nearly half the feather length; neutral grey coloration; relatively flexible rachis; absence of distinct raptorial notching or owl-like fringing.

Habitat

Extremely varied; naturally occurs on sea cliffs and mountains but has successfully adapted to urban centers, parks, farms, and suburban areas worldwide.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; resident on every continent except Antarctica. They do not typically migrate except for short-distance movements in extreme weather.

Ecological Role

Primary prey base for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; they also act as significant seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff feathers), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey, different base structure), or dark morph raptors (which have much stiffer rachises).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated, dating back to ancient Mesopotamia. They possess an extraordinary homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to navigate.

Condition Notes

Fair to Poor. The feather shows significant 'separation' of the barbs (haggard appearance), likely due to environmental exposure, wet-dry cycles, or physical trauma/molting stress.
