Description

This is a soft, gray secondary wing feather from a Mourning Dove. The bird itself is a medium-sized, slender dove with a long, tapered tail, known for its mournful 'coo-oo-oo' call. They have a graceful flight style punctuated by whistling wing beats.

Colour & Pattern

A uniform mouse-gray to brownish-gray color. The dorsal surface is slightly darker than the ventral surface. There is no heavy banding, which is characteristic of this species' inner wing feathers. The calamus is semi-translucent.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane; small plumulaceous section near the calamus base. Barbicels are intact, providing a cohesive surface.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, silky, and soft texture. The surface has a slight matte finish typical of Columbidae, which possess powder down that can give feathers a 'bloomed' or dusty appearance.

Key Features

Uniform grayish-brown coloration, rounded tip, soft texture characteristic of doves, and a lack of distinct markings or bars on this specific secondary.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; found in open woodlands, prairies, agricultural fields, suburban gardens, and urban parks. Avoids deep, unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Resident to medium-distance migrant across North America, from Southern Canada through Central America and the Caribbean.

Ecological Role

Primarily a seed eater (granivore), playing a role in seed dispersal. They serve as a vital prey base for many urban and rural raptors like Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (feathers are usually lighter/paler gray) and White-winged Dove (which would show a distinct white patch on the wing feathers).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are one of the most hunted game birds in North America, yet populations remain stable. Their wings produce a distinctive high-pitched whistling sound upon takeoff as a startled alarm to other birds.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The vane is mostly intact with minor 'splits' near the trailing edge. No significant sun bleaching or parasitic damage is visible, suggesting a relatively recent molt.
