Description

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful tail, a small head, and a soft, pinkish-fawn to greyish-brown plumage. Known for its distinctive, mournful cooing calls, powerful and direct flight with whistling wings, and habit of bobbing its head while walking on the ground.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform soft greyish-brown or mouse-gray coloration with subtle warmer brownish tones, typical of the species' muted camouflage plumage; melanin-based pigmentation with no bright structural iridescence on this specific body feather.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper vane with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a slightly plumulaceous (fluffy) base with a small, inconspicuous afterfeather.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, soft yet firm texture with a matte appearance, lacking any oily coating or excessive gloss.

Key Features

Uniform muted greyish-brown color, rounded tip, soft yet firm pennaceous structure, and characteristic size associated with medium-sized columbids.

Habitat

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and scrublands, avoiding dense continuous forests.

Geographic Range

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States and Mexico into Central America, as well as the Greater Antilles; northern populations are migratory while southern populations are year-round residents.

Ecological Role

Important seed disperser and ground-foraging granivore. Serves as a primary prey species for numerous raptors, mammals, and avian predators, playing a key role in the food web.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), which tends to be larger, paler grey-buff, and possesses a distinct black neck collar.

Interesting Facts

Mourning doves are one of the most abundant and widely distributed birds in North America and can drink brackish water or water up to a high temperature that would kill other birds. They produce crop milk to feed their altricial young.

Condition Notes

Good condition, clean with intact barbs, minor wear at the extreme base where it detached from the follicle.
