Mourning Dove (also known as Carolina Pigeon, Carolina Turtledove)

The Mourning Dove is a medium-sized, slender-tailed dove with a graceful appearance, soft grayish-brown plumage, and a diagnostic mournful cooing vocalization. It is one of the most abundant and widely distributed birds across North America.

Displays a striking gradient: soft greyish-blue base transitioning into a prominent, velvety black subterminal band, sharply tipped with clean white. The rachis is light greyish-brown.

Pennaceous structure with tightly interlocked barbs and barbules across the vane, possessing standard hooklets and a small, delicate afterfeather, intact and in clean condition.

Smooth, silky texture with a matte appearance and fine, neat vane edges providing aerodynamic stability during flight.

The combination of a soft blue-grey base, a sharp black subterminal band, and a clean white tip on a moderately sized tail feather is diagnostic for this species.

Open country, scattered trees, farms, suburban areas, prairie, and deserts; generally avoids dense forests and wetlands.

Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the entire United States, Mexico, and into Central America, as well as the Greater Antilles.

Serves as an important prey species for various raptors and carnivorous mammals, and aids in seed dispersal by consuming vast quantities of weed seeds and waste grain.

White-winged Dove or Passenger Dove (extinct), but distinguished by the specific proportions of the black and white markings on the outer tail feathers.

Mourning Doves are capable of drinking water without lifting their heads, using their bill like a straw. They are also known for their fast, whistling flight caused by the wings beating against each other.

Good condition with minimal wear, clean barbs, intact tip, and no noticeable fading or structural damage.
