Description

This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. Pigeons are stout-bodied birds with short necks and small heads. Their flight is characterized by steady, rhythmic wingbeats and occasional sharp flicks. In the wild, they display a 'blue-bar' pattern with iridescent neck feathers, though urban populations show vast color variation from white to deep black.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform slate grey to charcoal. The dorsal (upper) surface shows a smooth gradient of grey; the ventral (under) surface is slightly paler. No distinct banding or spots are present, which is typical for the 'blue' morph primary.

Barb Structure

Densely pennaceous and tightly interlocked to provide a solid aerodynamic surface; plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs are present only at Very base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat waxy to the touch. The feather has a matte finish with a slight 'bloom' or powder, characteristic of pigeons which produce powder down for waterproofing.

Key Features

The distinctive uniform slate-grey color, the specific asymmetry of a pigeon primary, and the presence of fine 'pigeon powder' on the vane surface.

Habitat

Extremely versatile: urban centers, parks, farmland, and rocky cliffs (their ancestral habitat). They prefer flat surfaces for nesting and open areas for foraging.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; found on every continent except Antarctica. They are non-migratory permanent residents in almost all parts of their range.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also prolific seed eaters and can act as seed dispersers in rural environments.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more brown/tan), Eurasian Collared-Dove (smaller, lighter grey), or various raptors (which usually show banding or different rachis thickness).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago). They possess an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception, solar cues, and even their sense of smell to navigate hundreds of miles.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The vane is mostly intact with minimal fraying at the tip. No visible fault bars or major parasitic damage, suggesting a healthy individual.
