Description
This is a quintessential white body feather from a domestic duck. These birds are large, heavy-bodied waterfowl with broad orange bills and webbed feet. They are known for their loud quacking and social behavior.
Colour & Pattern
Pure snowy white throughout. There are no bandings, spots, or marks. The white is structural, caused by the reflection of light off the translucent protein structure.
Barb Structure
Mixed: The distal portion is pennaceous (flat and interlocking), while the proximal half is plumulaceous (downy and fuzzy) for insulation. Barbs are dense and white.
Texture & Surface
Silky and soft. The upper pennaceous portion feels smooth and slightly oily due to preen waxes, while the base is extremely soft and airy.
Key Features
Pure white color, large plumulaceous (downy) base, rounded tip, and a thick, translucent white rachis.
Habitat
Agricultural farms, parks with ponds, wetlands, and backyard coop environments.
Geographic Range
Worldwide distribution as a domesticated species; common across North America, Europe, and Asia in association with human settlements.
Ecological Role
Domestic ducks serve as a food source for humans and predators like foxes. They help control insect and aquatic plant populations in localized environments.
Similar Species
Great Egret (longer, thinner), Tundra Swan (much larger), or Snowy Owl (would have much softer, 'velvety' fringe and different structure).
Interesting Facts
Pekin ducks were originally bred in China and brought to the US in 1873. Their feathers are highly prized for industrial down production because of their excellent insulating properties.
Condition Notes
Excellent condition. The feather appears freshly molted or shed, with no visible fault bars, fraying, or parasitic damage.
