Description

This slate-gray feather belongs to a medium-sized, stout bird with a small head and short legs. Rock Pigeons are famous for their varied plumage, ranging from the 'wild type' blue-gray with iridescent neck feathers to checkered, red, and white variations. They are strong flyers with a characteristic flapping and gliding style.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform slate-gray (blue-gray) coloring typical of 'wild-type' Rock Pigeons. There is a slight darkening toward the tip. The ventral surface is a paler, more matte gray.

Barb Structure

The distal half is tightly interlocked (pennaceous) for weatherproofing, while the proximal half is loose and fluffy (plumulaceous) for insulation. An aftershaft is typically absent in this group.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly waxy on the pennaceous vane, with a soft, silky texture in the plumulaceous section. The surface has a matte to semi-glossy finish typical of Columbiformes.

Key Features

Uniform slate-gray coloration, rounded tip, and a very prominent, long 'fuzzy' plumulaceous base that occupies nearly half the feather's length.

Habitat

Found in a vast array of environments including urban centers, farmland, rocky sea cliffs, and deserts. They prefer ledges for nesting and roosting.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced to and resident in almost every major city and rural area worldwide.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. As seed eaters, they also play a minor role in seed dispersal.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more brownish/tan), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, slightly different gray-purple hue), and various species of urban Gulls (which have different rachis structures and less downy fluff).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons are the first bird species to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years. They possess an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception, sun position, and olfactory cues to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Good condition; the pennaceous vane is intact with minimal fraying, though there is some slight separation of barbs on the left side (likely during molt or handling). No obvious sign of parasite damage.
