Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a medium-sized, slender-tailed dove with a graceful flight style characterized by a whistling wing beat. They possess soft grey-brown plumage with distinctive black spots on the wings and dark-bordered tail feathers. They are frequently observed foraging on the ground for seeds.

Uniform soft grey-blue to muted brownish-grey coloration with a subtle silvery sheen. The rachis is light grey near the base and darkens toward the tip. Coloration is typical of adult non-breeding plumage.

Pennaceous structure tightly interlocked along the upper vane with functional barbicels, transitioning into a soft, plumulaceous base with a small, wispy downy tuft.

Mourning Doves are one of the most widely distributed and abundant birds in North America. They produce a mournful cooing sound that is often mistaken for an owl hoot. They can drink water without lifting their heads by using their bill like a straw.
