Description

This is a clean, white flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. In the wild, these birds are blue-gray with iridescent neck feathers, but domestic breeding has introduced pure white individuals. Pigeons are stout birds with short necks and small heads, known for their powerful, flapping flight and distinctive cooing calls.

Colour & Pattern

Pure white (leucistic or domestic morph). Lacks the standard gray and black bars of wild-type pigeons; consistent with 'White King' or common domestic decorative breeds often seen in urban feral populations.

Barb Structure

The distal portion is pennaceous with tightly interlocking barbs providing a smooth aerodynamic surface; the proximal base features loose, plumulaceous barbs (downy texture) for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat waxy to the touch; the dorsal surface has a slight sheen while the ventral side is matte. It feels lightweight yet rigid.

Key Features

Rounded tip, broad vane relative to length, white rachis, and the presence of a downy tuft at the base. The lack of pigments suggests a domestic or feral 'white' color morph.

Habitat

Found in a variety of environments from urban city centers and suburban parks to agricultural fields and rocky sea cliffs.

Geographic Range

Global distribution; resident on every continent except Antarctica. Non-migratory but highly mobile within local territories.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also prolific seed eaters and opportunistic scavengers.

Similar Species

White Dove (Streptopelia risoria) feathers are smaller and more delicate; Cattle Egret feathers are more elongated and have a different barb density.

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated. They have an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Good condition; the feather shows some minor 'splitting' of the barbs on the trailing edge, likely due to mechanical wear or the molting process. The calamus is clean and intact.
