Description

The feather is a medium-gray contour feather from the Rock Pigeon. This bird is a medium-sized, stout-bodied dove with a typical wingspan of 25-28 inches. Known for its varied plumage (ranging from white to brick red to tuxedo-patterned), the most common form features an iridescent green and purple neck and a pale gray body with two black wing bars.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform slaty gray or charcoal gray with a subtle matte finish. No distinct banding or spots are visible, consistent with the base coloration of the 'blue-bar' or 'checkered' morphs.

Barb Structure

The distal half is pennaceous and tightly interlocked; the proximal half is plumulaceous (downy) for insulation. No specialized comb-like structures are present.

Texture & Surface

The tip is smooth and slightly waxy (typical of water-resistant pigeon feathers), while the base is exceptionally soft and silky. Surface appears matte due to being wet.

Key Features

Rounded tip, uniform slate-gray color without banding, and a very prominent downy base which occupies nearly half the feather's length.

Habitat

Ubiquitous in urban environments, farmlands, and rocky cliffs. They favor man-made structures for nesting.

Geographic Range

Worldwide distribution; native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but widely introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Primarily a seed-eater and scavenger; provides a significant food source for urban predators such as Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/brown), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray/buff), and American Crow (larger, stiffer, and more iridescent black).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated by humans over 5,000 years ago. They possess an extraordinary homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way back to roosts from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Fair to Poor; the feather is wet, causing the barbs to clump (velcro-like separation). No significant parasitic damage or fault bars are visible.
