Common Raven (also known as the Northern Raven)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Passeriformes, Family: Corvidae, Genus: Corvus, Species: Corvus corax
Family: Corvidae (Crows, Jays, and Ravens)
- Shape
- Broad and slightly asymmetrical with a rounded, blunt tip. The feather shows a slight curve and a wide vane characteristic of inner tail feathers.
- Size
- Approximately 7-9 inches (18-23 cm) in length. Consistent with the large tail dimensions of an adult Common Raven, which has a tail length of 20-26 cm.
- Rarity
- Common in appropriate habitat. While widespread, they are less densely populated than American Crows but easily found in the Western US and northern forests.

Description
A massive, all-black passerine with a thick bill and a wedge-shaped tail in flight. This feather reflects the bird's rugged nature. Ravens are the largest songbirds in the world, known for their acrobatic flight and deep, croaking 'gronk-gronk' calls.
Colour & Pattern
Deep matte black with a subtle blue-violet iridescent sheen visible under direct light. The color is uniform melanin-based black. The ventral (under) side is slightly more dull grey-black.
Barb Structure
Primarily pennaceous and tightly interlocked for aerodynamics, transitioning to plumulaceous (downy) at the base (quill end). Barbules are dense, creating a solid vane.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and somewhat glossy. The surface has a waxy feel that provides water resistance. The trailing edge is flexible while the leading edge is more rigid.
Key Features
Large size, uniform black coloration with oily sheen, thick black rachis, and the specific rounded width characteristic of corvid tail feathers.
Habitat
Extremely versatile: found in coniferous and deciduous forests, high deserts, coastal cliffs, tundra, and increasingly in urban/suburban environments.
Geographic Range
Widespread across the Northern Hemisphere. Found throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Most populations are year-round residents.
Ecological Role
Apex scavenger and occasional predator. They play a vital role in cleaning up carrion and are important indicators of ecosystem health due to their wide ranges.
Similar Species
American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) feathers are smaller and less stiff. Chihuahuan Raven (Corvus cryptoleucus) is smaller and often has white bases to neck feathers, though individual flight feathers are nearly identical.
Interesting Facts
Ravens are considered one of the most intelligent animals on Earth, capable of problem-solving, tool use, and even 'reciprocal altruism.' They can mimic human speech better than many parrots.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is some minor 'zipper' separation (breaking of barbicel hooks) on the trailing vane and some wear at the tip, suggesting it was molted naturally.
