Description

This is a sturdy grey tail feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. They are known for their varied plumage, ranging from the classic slate-grey with iridescent neck feathers to white, reddish-brown, or checkered patterns. Their flight is strong and direct with frequent wing clapping upon takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Solid slate-grey or 'blue-grey' with a subtle darker terminal band toward the tip. The coloration is consistent with the wild-type or 'blue-bar' morph of the Rock Pigeon.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane, with a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the very base (the calamus).

Texture & Surface

Smooth, slightly waxy, and relatively stiff. The surface has a matte to semi-glossy finish common in pigeons which produce 'powder down' for waterproofing.

Key Features

Broad, symmetrical shape; slate-grey color with a pale rachis; rounded tip; lack of distinct barring found in hawks or owls.

Habitat

Ubiquitous in urban and suburban environments, farms, and rocky seaside cliffs (their ancestral habitat).

Geographic Range

Worldwide distribution; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced to every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

In urban ecosystems, they provide a primary food source for urban-dwelling raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also act as seed dispersers in more rural settings.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers (smaller, more tapered); Band-tailed Pigeon feathers (larger, different banding); various small raptors (usually have distinct barring and asymmetrical wing feathers).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers since at least 2500 BC due to their incredible homing ability.

Condition Notes

Excellent condition; the vanes are intact without significant wear or 'fault bars' (stress lines), suggesting it was molted naturally from a healthy individual.
