Feral Pigeon (also known as Rock Dove, Rock Pigeon, or City Pigeon)

This feather belongs to a Feral Pigeon, a bird known for its incredible variety of plumage colors due to centuries of captive breeding. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. While 'wild' pigeons are grey with two black wing bars, feral individuals like the one this feather came from can be white, brown, piebald, or charcoal.

Brownish-grey base color with a distinct white patch on the inner vane. This 'pied' or variegated plumage is highly characteristic of domestic and feral lineages rather than wild-type rock doves.

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane for flight stability, transitioning to plumulaceous (downy) barbs at the very base (calamus area).

Smooth and somewhat silky with a slight matte-to-satin finish. The surface feels slightly oily, which provides some water resistance.

Rounded tip, distinct white 'pied' patch against a brownish ground color, and a sturdy but flexible white-based rachis.

Extremely diverse; predominantly urban and suburban environments, farms, rocky cliffs, and bridges. They thrive wherever there are flat surfaces for nesting and human-provided food.

Globally distributed; found on every continent except Antarctica. They are largely non-migratory permanent residents.

Primary role as a granivore and prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They are efficient scavengers of human food waste.

Mourning Dove (slimmer, more pointed feathers), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lacks the pied white patches), and various domestic pigeon breeds.

Pigeons are one of the few birds that can produce 'crop milk' to feed their young. They are also famous for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way over hundreds of miles.

Fair to Good. There is some separation of the barbs (zipper effect) on the lower trailing edge, and the tip shows minor wear, suggesting it may be a naturally molted feather.
