Description

The Mourning Dove is one of the most abundant and familiar birds in North America, recognized by its slender form, long tapered tail, muted grey-brown plumage, and mournful cooing vocalizations. They are swift, agile fliers capable of rapid, direct flight.

Colour & Pattern

Soft grayish-brown or light taupe coloration with a slightly paler, whitish-gray base and rachis. Melanin-based pigmentation without structural iridescence.

Barb Structure

Mixed structure featuring an upper pennaceous region with interlocked barbs and a lower plumulaceous region with loose, fluffy barbs lacking effective hooklets.

Texture & Surface

Soft and silky texture with a matte appearance. The basal section is extremely fluffy, while the distal vane is smooth and pliable.

Key Features

Soft grayish-brown tone, rounded tip, and distinctively fluffy lower half combining contour and semiplume characteristics.

Habitat

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, prairies, and edges of woods, avoiding dense, unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the entire United States and into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Partially migratory in northern zones.

Ecological Role

Acts as an important seed disperser and a primary food source for numerous raptor species across agricultural and suburban landscapes.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), which generally feature larger or differently shaded gray and pinkish-brown feathers.

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves drink by suction rather than sipping and tilting their heads back, allowing them to consume water continuously in a few seconds.

Condition Notes

Good condition with mostly intact barbs, minor natural wear at the edges, and no visible parasitic damage or staining.
