Description
This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. The bird is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. This specific feather displays the classic 'blue-bar' phenotype, characterized by the dark greyish-black band against a light grey background. Pigeons are known for their strong, direct flight and 'cooing' vocalizations.
Colour & Pattern
Charcoal grey to slate blue base with a prominent dark subterminal band near the tip. A silvery-white or light grey wash is visible on the inner vane, often showing a slight iridescent sheen depending on light angle.
Barb Structure
Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked for flight efficiency, with a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the base (superior umbilicus) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, slightly oily, and moderately stiff. The surface has a matte to semi-glossy finish typical of birds that produce a high amount of powder down.
Key Features
Rounded tip, distinct dark grey subterminal band, and the presence of a white/silver inner vane edge coupled with a translucent calamus.
Habitat
Extremely varied, including urban centers, farmlands, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas. They are highly adapted to human environments.
Geographic Range
Worldwide distribution. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced to every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They are also significant seed eaters.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed feather), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, different banding), or various domestic pigeon breeds which may show similar but more checkered patterns.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (as early as 4500 BC). They have an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and landmarks to navigate hundreds of miles back to their roosts.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact with minimal fraying. There is some minor separation at the base of the vane, suggesting it was cast during a natural molt.
