Description
The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather, with its characteristic 'pigeon gray' hue, reflects the dominant plumage color. Pigeons have dense, soft feathers designed for both insulation and high-speed flight. They are famous for their iridescent neck feathers and cooperative behavior in urban settings.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform pale blue-gray (ash-gray) coloration. The rachis appears translucent to white at the base and darkens slightly toward the tip. No distinct banding or spots are present.
Barb Structure
The base features loose, plumulaceous barbs lacking hooklets for insulation, while the apex (tip) shows a small pennaceous (interlocked) section. No aftershaft is visible, which is characteristic of the Columbidae family.
Texture & Surface
Extremely soft and silky. The downy portion feels like cotton, while the small pennaceous tip has a smooth, matte finish common in domestic and wild pigeons.
Key Features
Soft blue-gray color, absence of aftershaft (notch at base), high ratio of plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs, and small overall size.
Habitat
Found in diverse environments including urban centers, coastal cliffs, farmland, and rocky outcrops. They are highly adaptable to human-dominated landscapes.
Geographic Range
Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but now naturalized globally. Resident year-round across most of North and South America and Australia.
Ecological Role
Primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also serve as scavengers in urban ecosystems, though they can be considered pests due to acidic droppings.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff color), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray/cream), and various domestic pigeon breeds (which may have identical feather structure but different colors).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, and they are one of the few birds that can drink water by sucking it up without having to tilt their heads back. They were the first domesticated birds, used for food and communication for millennia.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The feather appears to be a natural molt. The barbs are mostly intact though slightly spread due to contact with the carpet surface (mechanical wear).
