Description

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a long, tapering tail, small head, and soft grey-brown plumage accented by black spots on the wings and iridescent pinkish patches on the neck.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform greyish-brown or taupe coloration with a subtle paler fringe along the edge, typical of melanin-based pigmentation found in dove body plumage.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and soft to the touch with a matte finish, lacking any strong iridescence except for subtle sheen under direct light.

Key Features

Uniform grey-brown color, slender tapering shape, pale rachis, and the combination of pennaceous tip and plumulaceous base typical of columbid body feathers.

Habitat

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and grassland edges, generally avoiding dense forests and deep wetlands.

Geographic Range

Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States and Mexico into Central America, as well as parts of the Caribbean.

Ecological Role

Serves as an important prey species for various raptors and mammals, and acts as a significant seed disperser for numerous weed and grass species.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), which tends to have a paler, more uniform sandy-grey coloration without the distinctive black wing spotting.

Interesting Facts

Mourning doves are capable of drinking water without lifting their heads, using their bill like a straw. They produce crop milk to feed their altricial nestlings.

Condition Notes

Good condition with mostly intact barbs, minor natural wear at the very tip, and no obvious signs of parasitic damage or fading.
