Description

This is a classic tail feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. While feral populations vary in color, the 'wild type' features a blue-grey body with iridescent neck feathers and distinct black wing bars. Their flight is strong and direct, punctuated by loud wing claps during takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Pale blue-gray base transitioning into a wide, dark charcoal or black subterminal band at the tip. The very edges of the tip may show slight wear/fading.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane, becoming slightly plumulaceous (fluffy) at the very base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat stiff with a matte finish; the surface has a slightly 'powdery' feel due to specialized powder down used for waterproofing.

Key Features

The prominent dark subterminal band against a lighter grey base is diagnostic for Columba livia tail feathers.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; found in urban city centers, rocky cliffs, farmland, and bridges.

Geographic Range

Global distribution; resident year-round on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also function as seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered, different banding), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, specific white band), and Stock Dove (lacks the distinct dark tail band).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated. They have an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and landmarks to navigate over hundreds of miles.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good; shows some distal fraying (weathering) at the tip and minor separation of the barbs along the edges, suggesting it is a naturally molted feather.
