Description

This is a sturdy body contour feather from a Canada Goose. The bird is large with a long black neck, 'chinstrap' white cheek patches, and a brownish body. They are famous for their V-shaped flight formations and loud honking calls.

Colour & Pattern

Variegated brownish-gray on the outer vane fading to a lighter, silvery-gray at the base. The feather displays a subtle gradient rather than distinct banding, typical of the bird's breast coloration.

Barb Structure

The top two-thirds are pennaceous and tightly interlocked for waterproofing; the bottom third is plumulaceous (downy) for insulation.

Texture & Surface

The surface is smooth and somewhat waxy/oily, providing the water-repellent quality necessary for waterfowl. The appearance is matte to slightly satin.

Key Features

Distinctive brownish-gray hue, a strong white rachis, and a very fluffy plumulaceous base characteristic of waterfowl insulation.

Habitat

Found in a variety of habitats near water, including lakes, ponds, bays, marshes, and often urban parks or golf courses.

Geographic Range

Widespread throughout North America; breeding across Canada and the northern US, with many populations being year-round residents in Maine.

Ecological Role

Primarily herbivores, they help with seed dispersal and serve as a food source for large predators. Their presence often indicates healthy wetland productivity.

Similar Species

Could be confused with a Wild Turkey body feather (which often has a darker, squared tip) or a Mallard hen feather (which is usually smaller and more heavily patterned).

Interesting Facts

Canada Geese are known for their strong mate bonds, often staying together for life. They are also highly adaptable to human-altered landscapes.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is minor separation of the barbs (splits) on the left side, which is natural wear for a molted feather. The calamus is intact.

Notes
