Colour & Pattern

Distinct two-tone coloration featuring a brownish-grey upper vane transitioning sharply to a dark brownish-black tip, with a fluffy white base and a white-margined edge.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous at the upper exposed tip providing a smooth surface, transitioning to plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) at the base where barbules lack hooklets.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and firm on the upper pennaceous portion; soft, fluffy, and downy at the base with high insulating properties.

Key Features

Contour feather with a dark brown-to-black tip, gradient brownish-grey midsection, and a fluffy white base.

Habitat

Found near a wide variety of freshwater habitats including lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes, as well as agricultural fields, urban parks, and lawns.

Geographic Range

Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, successfully introduced to Europe, New Zealand, and other parts of the world.

Ecological Role

Acts as an important grazer in wetland and grassland ecosystems, nutrient recycler, and a key food source for various apex predators.

Similar Species

Other large waterfowl such as Cackling Geese or various duck species, distinguished mainly by size, exact color gradients, and base fluff coloration.

Interesting Facts

Canada Geese mate for life and fly in V-formations to reduce wind resistance, allowing the flock to increase its overall flight range by over 70 percent.

Condition Notes

Good condition with intact barbs, clean surfaces, and normal wear typical of a recently molted body feather.
