Colour & Pattern

Rich grayish-brown upper vane transitioning to a paler, silvery-grey tone near the edges, with a stark white or light cream-colored fluffy base. The rachis is pale whitish-yellow.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a fluffy, plumulaceous base with loose downy barbs

Texture & Surface

Smooth and firm on the upper pennaceous vane with a soft, downy, and silky texture at the base. Matte finish overall.

Key Features

Uniform grayish-brown coloration with a broad rounded tip, contrasting stark white downy base, and pale stout rachis.

Habitat

Found in a wide variety of habitats near water, including lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes, agricultural fields, and urban parks with lawns.

Geographic Range

Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, successfully introduced to Europe, New Zealand, and other parts of the world. Highly adaptable and largely resident or short-distance migrant.

Ecological Role

Acts as an important grazer in wetland and terrestrial ecosystems, contributing to nutrient cycling through guano deposition, and serves as prey for large mammalian and avian predators.

Similar Species

Other large waterfowl such as Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii), though feathers are distinctly smaller; and various domestic goose breeds which may show lighter or white coloration.

Interesting Facts

Canada Geese mate for life and maintain complex family structures that can persist through the winter migration cycle.

Condition Notes

Good condition with intact barbs on the pennaceous portion and minor fraying at the fluffy base. No visible fault bars or parasite damage.
