Description
This is a soft, pure white body feather from a Rock Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with broad wings and short legs. While 'wild' types are grey with iridescent necks, urban populations exhibit a huge variety of white, brown, and mottled plumages.
Colour & Pattern
Pure white across the entire vane and rachis. No banding or spots are visible, indicating this comes from a leucistic or domestic-breed variant of the Rock Pigeon.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the tip and upper margins; plumulaceous (downy) at the base. Hooklets are present in the upper pennaceous portion.
Texture & Surface
Soft and silky to the touch with a matte finish. Lacks the stiffness of a flight feather.
Key Features
All-white color, small size, soft texture, and symmetrical shape typical of Columbid body feathers.
Habitat
Urban environments, city parks, agricultural fields, cliffs, and rocky ledges.
Geographic Range
Cosmopolitan distribution; found on every continent except Antarctica. Non-migratory in most urban settings.
Ecological Role
Primary prey for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also serve as urban scavengers and seed dispersers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers (usually smaller and tan/grey) or White-winged Dove feathers (larger with specific grey tones). Common Egret feathers are much larger and stiffer.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated. They have a unique 'homing' ability and can navigate using the Earth's magnetic field and visual landmarks.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is some terminal splitting at the tip and missing barbs along the mid-vane, suggesting it was molted or pulled during preening.
