Description
This is a secondary flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short neck, and small head. It typically features grey-blue plumage with iridescent green and purple neck patches and two dark wing bars, though domestication has led to vast color variations.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform medium slate grey or 'blue' gray. The dorsal surface shows a subtle semi-gloss, while the ventral side is lighter and more matte. No distinct banding or terminal bands are visible on this specific specimen.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs on the upper 80%; soft, plumulaceous barbs at the base (calamus area) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat stiff; the vane feels slightly oily/water-resistant, a characteristic of many columbids. The surface is matte with a very fine velvety bloom typical of pigeon plumage.
Key Features
Uniform grey coloration, rounded tip without emargination, and the specific curvature and 'velvety' texture unique to Columbidae.
Habitat
Ubiquitous in urban, suburban, and agricultural areas. Naturally occurs on rocky cliffs and coastal ledges.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; resident throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Non-migratory but highly mobile.
Ecological Role
Primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; helps in nutrient cycling in urban environments.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered/pointed tip, browner tone); Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey, different rachis color).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons can find their way home from over 1,000 miles away using magnetoreception and polarized light; they were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back to Mesopotamian times.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is significant 'zipper' separation (unlocked barbs) along the trailing edge and base, likely due to mechanical wear or handling. No fault bars visible.
