Description

A ghost-like raptor known for its heart-shaped facial disk and lack of ear tufts. The plumage is a beautiful mix of honey-gold and grey above, with snowy white or spotted underparts.

Colour & Pattern

Pale warm buff to tan coloration with a dark brown/blackish tip. The lower portion transitions into a pure snowy white. Subtle mottling is visible in the tawny section.

Barb Structure

Densely plumulaceous (downy) at the base for insulation, transition to a pennaceous structure at the tip. Features a characteristic 'velvety' surface due to long pennulae that dampen sound.

Texture & Surface

Incredibly soft, silky, and matte. Lacks the oily gloss of waterfowl feathers; instead, it has a 'powdered' feel which is an adaptation for silent flight.

Key Features

The soft tawny-gold color transitioning to a dark tip combined with an exceptionally high volume of basal down is diagnostic for Tytonidae contours.

Habitat

Open country, grasslands, agricultural fields, marshes, and woodland edges. Often nests in cavities, cliffs, or man-made structures like barns and silos.

Geographic Range

One of the most widespread birds in the world, found on every continent except Antarctica. In North America, found from southern Canada through Central America.

Ecological Role

Apex nocturnal predator specializing in rodent control. A single family of Barn Owls can consume over 1,000 rodents in a single nesting season.

Similar Species

Great Horned Owl (darker, coarser texture), Short-eared Owl (more distinct streaking), or Long-eared Owl (vane structure is less 'fluffy').

Interesting Facts

Barn Owls have such acute hearing that they can hunt in complete darkness, locating small mammals by sound alone using their asymmetrical ear openings.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The downy base is slightly matted, suggesting it may have been shed naturally (molted) or exposed to moisture; the rachis is intact.
