Description
The Mourning Dove is a medium-sized, slender bird with a long, pointed tail. They are known for their soft, mournful 'coo-oo' call and the whistling sound their wings make during takeoff. This feather reflects their subdued, camouflaged plumage designed for blending into ground-level environments.
Colour & Pattern
A soft, muted grayish-tan or 'buffy' brown. The color is uniform across the vane without distinct banding or spots, though there is a slight darkening toward the tip.
Barb Structure
The upper half is pennaceous and tightly interlocked, while the lower half (base) is plumulaceous and downy for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Velvety and exceptionally soft to the touch. The surface is matte, lacking iridescence, which is typical of dove body feathers.
Key Features
Distinctive soft grayish-tan color, velvety texture, and a high proportion of plumulaceous (downy) barbs at the base.
Habitat
Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban gardens, grasslands, and light woods.
Geographic Range
Widespread throughout North America, from southern Canada into Central America. Many populations are year-round residents, while northern birds migrate south.
Ecological Role
Primarily a seed-eater (granivore), they play a role in seed dispersal. They are a vital food source for many urban and rural raptors.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (larger, more gray) or White-winged Dove (grayer with different markings). The soft tan hue is most characteristic of Zenaida macroura.
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves can drink water without tilting their heads back, a rare trait among birds. They are also prolific breeders, sometimes raising up to six broods in a single year.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is some visible separation of the barbs ('zipping' issues) at the tip and edges, likely due to natural wear or handling.
