Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, American Mourning Dove)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful, long tapering tail and a small head. Known for its plaintive, owl-like cooing calls and rapid, whistling flight, it is one of the most abundant and widely distributed birds across North America.

Soft greyish-blue base fading into a distinct dark charcoal or black subterminal band, terminating in a clean white or pale grey tip. The underside is slightly paler grey.

Pennaceous vane structure with tightly interlocked barbs and barbules via barbicels, firm and intact condition.

Smooth, silky, and relatively matte with firm, interlocking vanes that offer slight rigidity.

Soft grey-brown body color overall, but for feathers specifically: the striking contrast of a dark subterminal band with a distinct white tip on the outer tail feathers.

Open country, scattered trees, farms, suburban areas, prairies, and forest edges, avoiding dense unbroken forests.

Widespread across North America, from Southern Canada through the United States and Mexico, into Central America and the Caribbean.

Serves as an important seed disperser and a primary prey species for various raptors and mammals, supporting higher trophic levels.

Passenger Pigeon (extinct), White-winged Dove, and Eurasian Collared-Dove, distinguished by size, tail shape, and specific white-and-black rectrix patterns.

Mourning Doves drink by sucking up water continuously without lifting their heads, a rare drinking method among birds. They are also prolific breeders, raising up to six broods a year in warm climates.
