Description
This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. The bird is medium-sized with a stout body, short legs, and a small head. Typical plumage is blue-grey with two black wing bars and an iridescent neck, though feral populations show vast color variations; this feather represents the 'blue-bar' or wild-type phenotype.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform slate grey or bluish-grey. The dorsal surface exhibits a smooth, matte cool-grey, while the ventral side (underside) appears lighter and slightly more silvery-grey. The rachis is dark grey/black near the tip, transitioning to a translucent cream at the calamus.
Barb Structure
Densely packed pennaceous barbs with interlocking distal and proximal barbules; smooth, tight vane structure designed for aerodynamic lift with minimal air leakage.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, slightly waxy texture with a subtle matte finish. The surface feels firm and resilient, characteristic of a bird that flies frequently in varied weather.
Key Features
Uniform slate color, rounded tip, medium size, and the characteristic 'pigeon-grey' hue that lacks the rufous or white tipping found in other similarly sized birds.
Habitat
Extremely varied, ranging from rocky sea cliffs (original habitat) to urban city centers, farms, parklands, and bridges.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; found on every continent except Antarctica. Resident year-round in most temperate and tropical climates.
Ecological Role
Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also acts as a seed disperser and generalist scavenger.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers (smaller, more pointed, tan/brown), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, typically has a white band), or Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey-buff).
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated, used as food, messengers, and pets for over 5,000 years. They produce a unique 'crop milk' to feed their young.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The vane is mostly intact without significant fraying or 'fault bars,' suggesting a healthy diet during the molt cycle. Minimal wear at the tip.
