They are highly social, often gathering in massive roosts outside of the breeding season, and are well known for their problem-solving abilities and complex social structures
Colour & Pattern
Uniform glossy black with subtle blue-violet iridescence under direct light, typical of corvid structural coloration, with a dark rachis
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the upper visible vane, becoming slightly plumulaceous at the base near the calamus, intact and interlocking barbs with standard barbicels
Texture & Surface
Smooth and glossy with a firm, semi-rigid vane and a silky base
Key Features
Solid glossy black coloration with subtle iridescent sheen, rounded symmetrical contour shape, and a rachis that transitions from dark to white at the base
Habitat
Extremely adaptable, found in open woodlands, agricultural fields, pastures, parks, golf courses, and urban/suburban areas
Geographic Range
Widespread across North America, from southern Canada throughout the United States to northern Mexico, acting as a permanent resident in most areas
Ecological Role
Acts as an important scavenger, seed disperser, and occasional predator of small nests, playing a key role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem cleaning
Similar Species
Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus) and Common Raven (Corvus corax); distinguishing them by feather alone is difficult, but size and exact gloss can provide clues
Interesting Facts
Crows can recognize human faces, use tools, remember grudges, and hold complex funerals for their dead. Their large brains and problem-solving skills rival those of many primates
Condition Notes
Good condition with minimal wear, intact barbs, and clean structure showing little sign of sun bleaching or damage
