Red-tailed Hawk (Chicken Hawk, Red-tail)

The Red-tailed Hawk is a robust, formidable bird of prey measuring 18-26 inches in length with a massive 4-to-5-foot wingspan. Adults are easily recognized by their signature rusty-red tail, pale chest with a streaked belly band, and dark brown upperparts. They are soaring specialists, frequently seen riding thermal updrafts or perching patiently along highway poles.

Rich brown upper vane showing subtle gradations, transitioning into a paler grayish-brown or whitish area toward the middle, and ending in a fluffy white base. The rachis is pale whitish-ivory near the base, darkening slightly into a horn-brown color mid-shaft.

Pennaceous upper vane with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) lower section with un-interlocked barbs near the base. No prominent afterfeather is clearly visible.

Smooth, firm, and matte along the upper pennaceous portion; soft, silky, and fluffy at the base. The vane offers moderate rigidity to withstand wind resistance while protecting the underlayers.

Rounded contour feather shape, rich chocolate-brown upper vane shading to paler tones, and a fluffy white basal down region. Lacks the stiff, asymmetrical structure of a primary flight feather or the distinct dark barring found on typical tail feathers.

Extremely adaptable, inhabiting deserts, scrublands, urban areas, agricultural fields, deciduous and coniferous forests, and tropical rainforests, typically avoiding unbroken dense forests.

Widespread across North America, ranging from Alaska and northern Canada down through the United States, Mexico, and into parts of Central America and the Caribbean. Mostly permanent residents with some northern populations migrating south.

Acts as an apex avian predator regulating populations of small mammals, rodents, and reptiles, thereby maintaining balanced grassland and forest ecosystems.

Other large North American Buteos such as Swainson's Hawk or Rough-legged Hawk, as well as Great Horned Owl body feathers. Distinguished by specific shade variations, lack of heavy barring, and feather proportions.

Red-tailed Hawks have incredible eyesight, capable of spotting a mouse from 100 feet in the air. Their iconic scream is so dramatic and fierce that Hollywood sound designers routinely use it as the default vocalization for almost any raptor seen on screen, including Bald Eagles.

Good to Excellent condition. The barbs are intact with minimal fraying, clean appearance, showing no major sun bleaching, fault bars, or parasitic damage.
