Rock Pigeon (also known as Feral Pigeon, Rock Dove, or Domestic Pigeon)
Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Columbiformes; Family: Columbidae; Genus: Columba; Species: Columba livia
Family: Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
- Shape
- Asymmetrical with a slightly rounded tip. The leading edge (outer vane) is narrower than the trailing edge (inner vane), which is typical of flight feathers designed for lift.
- Size
- Approximately 4 to 5 inches in length. This is consistent with the secondary feathers of a medium-sized bird like a Rock Pigeon, which typically range between 10-14cm.
- Rarity
- Very Common. One of the most abundant and easily spotted birds in the world.

Description
The feather is a medium-gray secondary from a Rock Pigeon. Pigeons are stout-bodied birds with small heads and short legs. Their plumage varies wildly in domestic and feral forms—from checkered and pied to deep slate and rusty red—but the 'wild type' remains a pale gray with two black wing bars and a dark tail band.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform blue-gray or slate coloration. There is a subtle matte finish with no distinct banding or spots. The underside (ventral) is a paler, more silvery gray compared to the dorsal surface.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked and pennaceous throughout most of the vane for aerodynamic efficiency. At the base (near the calamus), the barbs are plumulaceous (loose and downy) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and stiff to the touch with a slightly waxy or powdery feel—characteristic of the powder down produced by Columbiformes to help with waterproofing and feather maintenance.
Key Features
Uniform slate-gray color, asymmetrical secondary shape, and a noticeably stout, translucent rachis. The presence of 'pigeon dust' or a matte, powdery texture is a diagnostic physical trait.
Habitat
Extremely varied, ranging from urban city centers and suburban parks to agricultural fields and rocky cliffs. It is a highly adaptable species found almost anywhere near human habitation.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed. Resident year-round across North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary role as a prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as seed dispersers and opportunistic scavengers in urban environments.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered/pointed, brownish-tan), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, darker), or Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter, sandy gray-buff).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons have an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way home. They also produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, a high-protein substance secreted from the lining of their esophagus.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is some noticeable mechanical wear and separation (splitting) of the barbs at the tip, likely due to contact with surfaces or post-molt handling.
