Description
A small, soft body feather from the Rock Pigeon. This bird is a medium-sized, stout bird with a small head and short legs. Plumage varies wildly in domestic/feral forms from iridescent greens and purples on the neck to blue-grey with black wing bars or solid dark 'checker' patterns.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform charcoal grey to dark slate. There is no distinct banding; the tip is darker/saturated melanin while the base transitions to a pale, semi-translucent grey.
Barb Structure
Plumulaceous (downy) at the base and pennaceous (firmly interlocked) towards the tip. The pennaceous part is relatively soft.
Texture & Surface
Velvety and soft to the touch. It has a matte finish typical of pigeon body feathers, lacks high gloss, and feels slightly oily or dust-coated.
Key Features
Soft pennaceous tip with a very large plumulaceous base; uniform slate-grey coloration without distinct markings; small size and thin, fragile rachis.
Habitat
Found in a vast range of environments from urban city centers, bridges, and skyscrapers to rural farms, cliffs, and coastal areas.
Geographic Range
Global distribution. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, but introduced and now resident on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper’s Hawks. They are also significant seed eaters and frequent scavengers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey/beige), or small feathers from American Crows (stiffer, glossier).
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated by humans, dating back to at least 4500 BCE in Mesopotamia. They are famous for their homing ability, navigating using the Earth's magnetic field and scent.
Condition Notes
Fair to Poor. The feather shows signs of significant wear, with the vane being split and frayed. It appears to be a naturally molted feather that has been weathered.
