Description
These feathers belong to the Red-tailed Hawk, a large buteo characterized by broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail. The iconic red tail visible in these feathers is the hallmark of an adult bird. They are known for their 'screaming' raspy call often used in movies.
Colour & Pattern
The tail feather features the classic cinnabar or rufous-red dorsal surface with a thin dark subterminal band and a white tip. Wing feathers show dark brown to blackish tones with white/buff mottling and barring.
Barb Structure
Primarily pennaceous and tightly interlocked with hooklets for flight efficiency, transitioning to plumulaceous (fluffy) near the base of the calamus for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and stiff surface with a slightly glossy sheen on the dorsal side. The ventral side is more matte and lighter in color. Leading edges feel firm for aerodynamic resistance.
Key Features
The diagnostic rufous-red color of the tail feather with a white tip and dark subterminal band is the most definitive identification feature.
Habitat
Open country, including grasslands, parks, woodlands, fields, and highway roadsides. They use high perches to scan for prey.
Geographic Range
Resident or migratory across North America, from central Alaska and Canada down through Mexico and Central America.
Ecological Role
Apex predator that controls rodent and rabbit populations. They generally sit at the top of the food chain in many North American ecosystems.
Similar Species
Red-shouldered Hawk (smaller, different tail banding), Cooper's Hawk (narrower tail, grey/brown bars), and Ferruginous Hawk (larger, different leg feathering).
Interesting Facts
The Red-tailed Hawk's raspy 'keeer-r-r' scream is almost always used in Hollywood as the voice for any eagle or hawk, regardless of species.
Condition Notes
Fair to Poor. The feathers show signs of traumatic removal (plucked or scavenged) rather than natural molt, with messy quills and frayed barbs near the base.
