Identify a feather

Description

A slender, medium-sized bird with a long, pointed tail. The feather reflects the bird's overall 'muted' aesthetic—a mix of delicate browns and grays that provide excellent camouflage against ground litter. In flight, the species is known for the whistling sound its wings make.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform soft grayish-tan or 'buffy' brown. There is a subtle matte finish without iridescence, typical of the neutral earth tones found on a Dove's mantle or wing.

Barb Structure

Densely interlocked (pennaceous) throughout the distal portion with a small plumulaceous (fluffy) downy section at the proximal base near the calamus

Texture & Surface

Extremely soft and silky to the touch, possessing a velvet-like matte surface that reduces light reflection

Key Features

Symmetrical spatulate shape, uniform buff-gray coloration, and lacks any distinct banding or terminal tipping common in larger raptors or songbirds.

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban gardens, grasslands, and light woods. Avoids deep unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Year-round resident across most of North America, from Southern Canada through Mexico and the Greater Antilles.

Ecological Role

Primary seed eater (granivore). They play a role in seed dispersal but are also a vital prey species for many raptors like Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (feathers are slightly paler/grayer) and White-winged Dove (which would show more distinct white or dark gray sections).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are prolific breeders and can raise up to six broods in a single year. They are one of the few bird species that can drink water by suction without tilting their heads back.

Condition Notes

The feather appears to be in Good condition; however, there is slight displacement of the barbs on the left margin, likely due to handling or natural wear before molting.
