Rock Pigeon (Rock Dove, Feral Pigeon)

Species

Columba livia

Feather Type

Secondary Flight Feather (Remex)

Family

Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)

Shape

Broad and moderately asymmetrical with a rounded tip; the vane is wider on the trailing edge than the leading edge.

Size

Estimated at 4.5 to 5.5 inches in length. This is consistent with the secondary feathers of a standard adult Rock Pigeon.

Rarity

Very Common. One of the most abundant bird species in the world, particularly in human-altered landscapes.

Color & Pattern

Uniformly pale grey to white. While many wild-type individuals have dark grey feathers, domestic and feral varieties often display leucism or are bred for pure white plumage (often called 'Wedding Doves').

Barb Structure

Pennaceous and tightly interlocked throughout most of the vane; plumulaceous (downy) barbs are present at the very base of the calamus. The barbs are well-structured for flight.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat waxy to the touch. Pigeons produce a significant amount of powder down, which can give the feather a slight matte 'bloom' or dusty feel.

Description

This is a clean, white flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. While the ancestral 'wild type' is grey with two black wing bars and a white rump, feral populations vary from all-white to brick red and mottled black.

Key Features

The broad, blunt shape typical of Columbiformes; the pale rachis; and the absence of any banding or mottling on the white vane.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; found in urban areas, farmland, rocky cliffs, and parks. They nest on building ledges, bridges, and in coastal caves.

Geographic Range

Worldwide distribution. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced to every continent except Antarctica.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There are minor separations in the barbs (splits) along the trailing edge, likely due to mechanical wear or the molting process. No visible fault bars or parasite damage.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are surprisingly intelligent and can recognize all 26 letters of the English alphabet. They also produce a 'crop milk' to feed their young, which is unique among birds (shared only with flamingos and male Emperor penguins).

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also efficient seed dispersers and scavengers that help clean up organic waste in cities.
