Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Dove)

The Mourning Dove is one of the most abundant and familiar birds in North America. Recognized by its plump body, long pointed tail, soft grey-brown plumage, and distinctive mournful cooing call, it is a frequent visitor to backyard bird feeders and rural roadsides alike.

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbules, transitioning to a plumulaceous (fluffy) base with minimal down

Soft pastel grey-brown coloration, rounded tip, smooth silky texture, and delicate slender shaft typical of Columbidae contour feathers

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and grassland edges

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into Central America

Serves as an important seed disperser and a vital prey base for various raptors and mammalian predators

Eurasian Collared-Dove, Rock Pigeon, and Passenger Pigeon (extinct). Distinguished by smaller size and specific pinkish-grey hue.

Mourning Doves are capable of drinking water without lifting their heads, acting like a straw. They are also known for producing pigeon's milk to feed their young.
