Identify a feather

Description

A medium-sized, stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather exhibits the classic 'blue-gray' coloration typical of the ancestral wild-type plumage. Rock Pigeons are known for their cooing calls and expert navigation abilities.

Colour & Pattern

Displays a deep charcoal or slaty-blue distal half transitioning into a lighter, grayish downy base. Some structural iridescence (purple/green) may be visible under direct light on the darker tip.

Barb Structure

The distal half is pennaceous (tightly interlocked barbs for weatherproofing), while the proximal base is plumulaceous (downy and fluffy for insulation).

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly waxy on the pennaceous vane to repel water; extremely soft and silky at the downy base. The surface appears matte but can show a slight oily gloss.

Key Features

Symmetrical shape, white rachis, and the distinct transition from a dark charcoal tip to a white, fluffy downy base.

Habitat

Found in a vast range of environments including urban centers, farmland, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas.

Geographic Range

Found worldwide, except for the most extreme Arctic/Antarctic regions. Primarily a resident species with no significant migration patterns.

Ecological Role

Serves as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also acts as a seed disperser and generalist scavenger.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/brown), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, different coloration), or various escaped domestic pigeon breeds which can have highly variable patterns.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons can find their way home from over 1,000 miles away using magnetoreception and polarized light; they were even used to deliver messages during both World Wars.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. The feather appears slightly water-logged and matted as it is resting on a damp surface, which obscures the individual barb connectivity.
