Description
This is a secondary flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. Pigeons are stout-bodied birds with short necks and small heads. Their plumage is highly variable in domestic forms, though the wild type is bluish-gray with two black wing bars and a white rump. They are known for their fast, direct flight and constant 'cooing' vocalizations.
Colour & Pattern
Dark slate gray to charcoal coloration with a subtly darker terminal band. The underside is a lighter silvery-gray. No iridescent patches are visible on this specific flight feather.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous and tightly interlocked throughout most of the vane; plumulaceous (downy) at the very base near the calamus for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, slightly oily/water-repellent surface with a matte finish. The vane is firm but flexible, typical of birds capable of strong, aerobic flight.
Key Features
Broad rounded tip, uniform slate-gray coloration, stiff dark rachis, and downy base. Lack of intricate patterning or high-contrast bands distinguishes it from hawk or owl feathers.
Habitat
Primarily urban and agricultural environments, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas. Highly adaptable to human-altered landscapes.
Geographic Range
Worldwide distribution across all continents except Antarctica; originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia.
Ecological Role
Predominantly a seed-eater; serves as a major prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered tip), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, specific gray-to-white transitions), or Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter sandy-gray).
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago). They possess an extraordinary homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to navigate over hundreds of miles.
Condition Notes
Good condition; slight fraying at the tip and along the trailing edge suggests it was a naturally molted feather rather than lost to predation.
