Description

The Rock Pigeon is a stout-bodied bird with a small head and short legs. This feather exhibits the classic 'shale gray' coloration that gives the species its name. The bird itself is famous for its iridescent neck feathers and varied plumage ranging from white to deep reddish-brown, though the gray variety is the wild-type standard.

Colour & Pattern

A soft medium-gray to slate-gray base. The feather shows a distinct gradient where the tip is darker (melanic) and the leading edge has a slight silvery or pale sheen, typical of the 'Blue Bar' or 'Checkered' domestic variations.

Barb Structure

The distal half is pennaceous (tightly interlocked), while the proximal base is plumulaceous (downy and fluffy) to provide insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat silky on the pennaceous portion with a matte finish; extremely soft and airy at the downy base. Highly water-resistant due to powder down and preen oil.

Key Features

Distinct bicolor appearance with a dark gray tip and lighter gray base, a very fluffy plumulaceous section at the bottom, and a slightly rounded, paddle-like silhouette.

Habitat

Urban environments, agricultural areas, cliffs, and rocky ledges. They are the most common bird in city centers globally.

Geographic Range

Found worldwide on every continent except Antarctica. They are resident year-round across most of North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Ecological Role

Primarily a seed and grain eater. They serve as a vital food source for urban-dwelling raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers (longer and more pointed), Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers (smaller and more beige/sandy in tone).

Interesting Facts

Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have a remarkable ability to find their way home from over 1,000 miles away using magnetic fields and infrasound.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. There is some minor separation of the barbs (split vane) at the tip, likely from wear or being handled by the owner after finding it. No visible fault bars.
