Description

The Mourning Dove is a medium-sized, slender bird with a long, pointed tail. It is known for its mournful 'coo-oo-oo' call. The plumage is generally a delicate grayish-brown with black spots on the wings and a pinkish hue on the breast of males.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform grayish-brown (olive-drab to taupe) on the outer vane with a subtle matte finish. The inner vane is a slightly paler silvery-gray. No distinct banding or spots are present on this specific wing feather.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs that are tightly interlocked, providing a aerodynamic surface. The base shows a small amount of plumulaceous (fluffy) downy structure near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and velvety texture with a matte surface. The feather feels lightweight and somewhat soft to the touch, which is typical of Columbidae.

Key Features

Uniform grayish-brown coloration, rounded tip, lack of distinct patterns or terminal bands, and the characteristic 'soft' appearance of the barbs.

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban gardens, grasslands, and light woods. They avoid deep, unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Widespread across North and Central America. Resident throughout most of the United States; northern populations migrate to the southern US and Mexico for winter.

Ecological Role

Primary seed eaters. They play a significant role in the food web as a prey species for hawks, falcons, and various mammalian predators.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (feathers are usually grayer and larger) and White-winged Dove (which would show a distinct white patch on the outer vane).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are one of the most successful avian species, with an estimated population of over 350 million in the US. They are capable of drinking water by suction, a rarity among birds.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact with very minor fraying at the tip. The calamus is clean, suggesting a natural molt rather than a forced removal.
