Description
The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather represents the drab but functional side of a bird that often displays iridescent purple and green neck feathers. They are known for their strong, direct flight and the characteristic 'cooing' sound.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform slate-gray or charcoal-gray. Pigeons exhibit significant polymorphic variation, but this solid dark gray is typical of 'blue-bar' or 'checkered' morphs. The ventral side is typically a lighter, more matte silver-gray
Barb Structure
Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked for flight efficiency; small plumulaceous section at the base (superior umbilicus) for insulation
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and somewhat waxy to the touch. The feather has a matte to low-gloss finish, which helps in shedding water and maintaining aerodynamic integrity
Key Features
Uniform charcoal/slate color without barring, sturdy dark rachis, rounded tip, and a size that bridges the gap between smaller doves and larger raptors
Habitat
Found in a vast array of environments including urban city centers, rocky cliffs, farmland, and suburban parks. They prefer structures that mimic natural cliffs for nesting
Geographic Range
Globally distributed. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced to and established resident populations on every continent except Antarctica
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also prolific scavengers in urban ecosystems
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed, browner), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray with different base structure), and Northern Flicker (which would have a yellow or red rachis)
Interesting Facts
Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers due to their incredible homing ability, sensing the Earth's magnetic field
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is significant fraying at the tip and some separation of the barbs (splits), suggesting this was a naturally molted feather that has experienced some mechanical wear or weathering
