Description

The Barn Owl is a ghost-like raptor with a distinctive heart-shaped facial disk. This feather reflects its elegant buff and white plumage, which serves as excellent camouflage against dry grass.

Colour & Pattern

Pale buff to golden-ochre base coloration with characteristic small, dark grey to blackish tear-shaped spots near the apex. The underside is typically lighter, almost white.

Barb Structure

Primarily plumulaceous (downy) at the base with a semi-pennaceous tip. Features specialized velvet-like pile (fringes) that dampen sound.

Texture & Surface

Extremely soft, silky, and velvet-like. It has a matte appearance designed for silent flight and thermal insulation.

Key Features

Heart-shaped facial disk (bird); buff-gold color with tiny dark spots and a velvet-smooth texture (feather).

Habitat

Open country, grasslands, agricultural fields, marshes, and woodland edges. Often nests in hollow trees, caves, or man-made structures like barns.

Geographic Range

Found on every continent except Antarctica. One of the most widely distributed bird species in the world.

Ecological Role

Apex predator of small mammals, particularly voles and mice. Listed as Least Concern globally, though local populations vary.

Similar Species

Short-eared Owl feathers are similar but often more heavily streaked and less golden. Great Horned Owl feathers are much larger and more coarsely barred.

Interesting Facts

Barn Owls have asymmetrical ear openings which allow them to triangulate the exact position of prey in total darkness using sound alone.

Condition Notes

Good condition; showing slight wear at the terminal barbs consistent with a natural molt.
