Mourning Dove (also known as the Carolina Dove or American Mourning Dove)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful, long tapering tail, pinkish-fawn to grey-brown upperparts, and dark spots on the wings. Known for its distinct, mournful cooing vocalization, it produces a whistling sound with its wings upon takeoff.

Bicolored pattern featuring a dark slate-gray to black basal and medial section, sharply demarcated by a broad, clean white terminal tip. The rachis is dark near the base and transitions to white through the terminal band.

Strongly pennaceous along the lower and middle vane with tightly interlocked barbicels providing a smooth, firm surface, becoming slightly frayed and fluffy at the very base near the superior umbilicus.

Smooth, firm, and matte in appearance with a clean, streamlined texture designed for aerodynamic efficiency during rapid, direct flight.

The sharp contrast between the dark grey-black central portion of the tail feather and the brilliant, broad white tip is diagnostic for outer tail feathers of the Mourning Dove.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, prairies, and desert edges. They avoid dense, continuous forests.

Widespread across North America, from southern Canada through the entire United States and into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Partially migratory in the north, year-round resident in the south.

Acting primarily as granivores, they play a vital role in seed dispersal and serve as an important prey base for numerous raptors and mammalian carnivores.

White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica), which also has white on the tail and wings but lacks the specific delicate tapering and grey-to-black base pattern found on Mourning Dove outer rectrices.

Mourning doves are one of the most widely distributed and abundant game birds in North America. They can drink brackish water and routinely fly long distances to reach water sources and mineral licks.

Good condition with minor fraying at the extreme basal plumulaceous section. The pennaceous vane and white tip are intact and clean.
