Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful long tail, a small head, and a distinctive melancholy cooing vocalization. Their plumage is predominantly delicate grey-brown with black spots on the wings and pinkish-fawn underparts.

Uniform soft grayish-brown (taupe) with a slightly darker central rachis and very subtle lighter edges, typical of non-iridescent melanin-based coloration found in dove body plumage.

Tightly interlocked pennaceous structure in the upper half, transitioning to slightly looser barbs near the base; barbicels present and intact.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and edge habitats avoiding dense forests.

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into Central America, as well as the Greater Antilles. Northern populations are migratory.

Important granivores consuming vast quantities of weed seeds and waste grain, serving as a primary prey species for various raptors.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), which tends to have slightly paler, greyer feathers and a black neck patch.

Mourning Doves are among the most abundant and widely distributed birds in North America and can fly at speeds up to 55 mph.
