Description

This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon, a stout bird with a wingspan of 24-28 inches. Known for their iridescent neck feathers and varied plumage, the dark gray of this primary feather indicates a bird with common 'wild-type' or 'checker' morph coloration. They are strong, fast fliers with a clapping wingbeat upon takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Solid dark slate gray to charcoal (melanin-rich coloration). The dorsal side is darker and more matte, while the ventral side (underside) shows a slight silvery-gray sheen common in pigeons.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs designed for aerodynamic efficiency. The lower portion near the calamus shows a small amount of plumulaceous (downy) structure for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and stiff to the touch. The surface has a slightly powdery texture, characteristic of 'powder down' produced by specialized feathers in this family to help with waterproofing.

Key Features

White calamus/rachis base contrasting with dark slate vane, rounded tip, and the characteristic stiffness of a Columbid flight feather.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; found in urban city centers, suburban areas, agricultural fields, and occasionally rocky sea cliffs (their ancestral habitat).

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; resident year-round on every continent except Antarctica. They do not typically migrate long distances.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They are also efficient scavengers in urban environments.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are smaller and more pointed; Crow (Corvus) feathers are larger, wider, and have a more intense black sheen.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons produce 'crop milk' to feed their young and were the first birds to be domesticated over 5,000 years ago. They have an uncanny ability to find their way home using magnetoreception and infrasound.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is slight separation of the barbs (zipper effect) on the trailing edge, likely from wind wear or physical contact before being molted.
