Rock Pigeon (also known as Feral Pigeon or Rock Dove)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Columbiformes, Family: Columbidae, Genus: Columba, Species: Columba livia
Family: Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
- Shape
- Relatively broad and asymmetrical vane with a slightly rounded tip. The leading edge (outer vane) is narrower than the trailing edge (inner vane), typical of mid-wing placement.
- Size
- Approximately 4 to 5 inches (10-12 cm) in length. This is consistent with the secondary feathers of an adult Rock Pigeon, which typically range from 3.5 to 5.5 inches.
- Rarity

Description
A classic grey flight feather from the Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short legs, and a small head. They are known for their varying plumage, though the ancestral form has a grey body with two black wing bars and a teal-purple iridescent neck.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform medium grey to charcoal grey (melanin-based). The dorsal surface is slightly darker than the ventral (underside). There is no distinct banding, suggesting it is from a wild-type grey plumage or a 'blue' morph individual.
Barb Structure
The upper portion is tightly interlocked and pennaceous for aerodynamic stability, while the base (near the calamus) features loose, plumulaceous barbs providing insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, matte, and slightly waxy. Pigeons produce a 'powder down' that can leave a fine, dusty residue on feathers, assisting in waterproofing and maintenance.
Key Features
The broad, rounded tip and uniform grey coloration, combined with the plumulaceous downy base and the size, are diagnostic for Columbidae.
Habitat
Extremely varied, ranging from urban city centers and bridges to agricultural fields, cliffs, and coastal rocky outcrops.
Geographic Range
Found worldwide, except for the high Arctic and Antarctic. Highly successful in both its native Eurasian/African range and introduced populations across the Americas and Australia.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also act as seed dispersers in rural environments.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller and more tapered; Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are similar in size but generally a lighter, warmer sandy-grey.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons are famous for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way home from hundreds of miles away. They were the first birds to be domesticated by humans.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The vanes are largely intact with minor fraying at the tip. The calamus is clear, suggesting it was naturally molted rather than plucked.
