Description

The Golden Pheasant is one of the most vividly colored and striking birds in the world. The adult male features a golden-yellow crest with a dark red rump, a bright yellow cape that fans out during courtship displays, and deep red underparts. The feathers of the cape are exceptionally fine, silky, and prized for their brilliant coloration.

Colour & Pattern

Vibrant, rich golden-yellow with a glossy sheen and fine, silky texture. The coloration is uniform along the feather web, highlighting the intense carotenoid pigmentation.

Barb Structure

Semiplume-like structure with a fine central rachis and long, flexible, relatively unhooked barbs that create a soft, hair-like, flowing appearance.

Texture & Surface

Silky, soft, and glossy to the touch with a fine, fluid drape due to the lack of rigid interlocking barbicels.

Key Features

Brilliant golden-yellow color, elongated narrow shape, soft and silky barb structure without firm interlocking vanes, and glossy appearance.

Habitat

Dense forests, woodlands, and scrub areas with thick undergrowth in its native mountainous regions.

Geographic Range

Native to mountainous areas of western China, but feral populations have established themselves in various parts of the world, including the United Kingdom and parts of Europe and North America.

Ecological Role

Omnivorous ground-feeder consuming seeds, leaves, and invertebrates, acting as a seed disperser and insect predator within its forest floor ecosystem.

Similar Species

Lady Amherst's Pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae), which has similar ornamental ruff feathers but in contrasting colors like white, black, and green.

Interesting Facts

Despite their bright and seemingly conspicuous plumage, Golden Pheasants are remarkably cryptic in their dense, dark forest habitats, making them surprisingly difficult to spot in the wild.

Condition Notes

Good condition, fresh, clean, with intact barbs and no signs of severe wear, fading, or parasitic damage.
