Description
This is a small, soft white feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short neck, and small head. In urban settings, they display vast color variations including grey, white, tan, and mottled patterns.
Colour & Pattern
Pure white (leucistic or domestic breed trait). While wild-type Rock Pigeons are grey, white feathers are extremely common in urban populations due to domestic ancestry.
Barb Structure
Transitioning from plumulaceous (downy) at the base to a loosely pennaceous (structured) tip. The barbs are fine and lack the stiff interlocking hooks of flight feathers.
Texture & Surface
Extremely soft, silky, and matte. It lacks the glossy iridescence found on the neck feathers of the same species.
Key Features
Small size, pure white color, lack of rigid structure, and high ratio of downy barbs to pennaceous barbs.
Habitat
Highly adaptable, found in urban areas, agricultural fields, rocky cliffs, and around human structures globally.
Geographic Range
Worldwide distribution, excluding the most extreme polar regions. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but introduced globally.
Ecological Role
Primary prey for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also serve as seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers (usually tan/buff), White-winged Dove feathers (larger), or domestic chicken down (more disorganized barb structure).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons produce a protein-rich 'crop milk' to feed their young. They are also famous for their incredible homing ability, navigating using the Earth's magnetic field and visual landmarks.
Condition Notes
Good; the feather appears fresh and intact, likely recently molted or dislodged during preening. No visible parasite damage (fault bars).
