Description
This is a sturdy tail feather from a Rock Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with thick bodies and short legs. While plumage varies wildly in domestic/feral crosses, the classic 'blue-gray' feather shown here is representative of the species' natural appearance. They are known for their rapid, direct flight and 'cooing' vocalizations.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform blue-gray or slate-gray coloration, typical of the wild-type or 'blue bar' pigeon phenotype. The rachis is dark and transitions to a lighter, translucent color at the calamus (quill). No distinct banding or terminal bands are visible, suggesting a more central or uniform-colored rectrix.
Barb Structure
The upper portion is tightly interlocked (pennaceous), providing the necessary rigidity for flight and steering. The base exhibits a high density of loose, fluffy (plumulaceous) barbs for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, matte, and slightly waxy to the touch. The feather has a characteristic 'powder down' bloom common to the Columbidae family, which helps with waterproofing.
Key Features
The broad, rounded tip, uniform slate-gray color, and the notable amount of downy fluff at the base of the shaft are diagnostic for pigeons.
Habitat
Extremely versatile; found in urban environments, city centers, bridges, agricultural areas, and rocky cliffs (their ancestral habitat).
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; a year-round resident in almost every major city and temperate region across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Ecological Role
Primary role as a prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also act as seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are smaller, more tapered, and usually a warmer tan/buff color. Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata) feathers are similar but usually show a distinct white or dark band.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons produce a protein-rich 'crop milk' to feed their young, and they are one of the few birds that can drink water by sucking it up rather than tilting their heads back to swallow.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact, although there is some separation (splitting) visible on the trailing edge toward the base, likely from natural wear or the molting process.
