Rock Pigeon (Rock Dove, Feral Pigeon)

Species

Columba livia

Feather Type

Flight feather (Remex); likely a secondary or an inner primary.

Family

Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)

Shape

Slightly asymmetrical with a rounded tip; the vane is broader on the trailing edge than the leading edge.

Size

Estimated 4-5 inches (10-13 cm) in length; consistent with mid-sized Columbidae flight feathers.

Rarity

Very Common; one of the most abundant and easily spotted birds in the world.

Color & Pattern

Dull grayish-brown or 'blue-gray' base with a distinctive white diagonal band or 'slash' near the base of the outer vane. Melanin-based coloration typical of the 'blue-bar' or 'checkered' wild-type morph.

Barb Structure

Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked for flight efficiency, with a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the base of the quill.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and stiff with a matte finish. Like most pigeon feathers, it may feel slightly powdery due to high production of powder down in this family.

Description

This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. The bird is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. In its wild form, it has a bluish-gray head, iridescent green and purple neck feathers, and two black bars on the wings. This specific feather reflects the classic gray and white markings found in many common urban morphs.

Key Features

The most diagnostic feature is the white patch on the outer vane contrasting against the dark gray-brown, combined with the rounded tip and stiff flight feather structure.

Habitat

Extremely versatile: found in urban centers, farms, rocky cliffs, and bridges. Prefers man-made structures for nesting.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.

Condition Notes

Good condition; the barbs are mostly intact though there is slight fraying at the tip. No obvious signs of parasite damage or fault bars.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are renowned for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way home. They are one of the few bird species that can drink by sucking up water without tilting their heads back.

Ecological Role

Predominantly a seed-eater; serves as a major prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed feathers, lacks the white base slash) and Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray, different tail/wing pattern).
