Description

The Wild Turkey is a large, iconic North American game bird known for its iridescent plumage, fan-shaped tail, and bare, colorful head. Males boast vibrant red, blue, and white skin wattles and a characteristic chest beard. They are strong runners and capable, though short-distance, fliers that roost in tall trees at night.

Colour & Pattern

Intricate black and brown vermiculated barring across a dark greyish-brown base, culminating in a distinctive subterminal black band followed by a warm buff to chestnut brown tip band

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper vane with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a dense, fluffy plumulaceous (downy) structure at the base without an afterfeather

Texture & Surface

Smooth, matte pennaceous upper surface with high rigidity, contrasting sharply with the soft, fluffy, downy basal section that provides thermal insulation

Key Features

Distinctive fine black and brown vermiculation, striking subterminal black band, and a warm buff-brown terminal margin coupled with a fluffy downy base

Habitat

Mixed hardwood and coniferous forests with scattered openings, woodlots, agricultural fields, and brushy areas near water sources

Geographic Range

Widely distributed across North America, from the forested regions of southern Canada down through the United States and into central Mexico, introduced to various other regions globally

Ecological Role

Acts as both predator (consuming insects, seeds, and small reptiles) and prey, serving as an important link in forest food webs and contributing to seed dispersal

Similar Species

Other gallinaceous birds like Grouse or Pheasants, but distinguished by the large size, specific vermiculation pattern, and distinct buff-brown terminal band of the Wild Turkey

Interesting Facts

Wild Turkeys can fly up to 55 mph for short bursts, can run at speeds of 25 mph, and have excellent daytime vision and hearing. Benjamin Franklin famously praised the turkey as a native American original, though he never formally proposed it as the national symbol.

Condition Notes

Good condition with intact barbs, clean edges, and no visible parasitic damage or severe fading, representing a naturally molted feather
